The Gift of Fear

Gavin de Becker’s book, The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence is a self-help book that allows readers to explore their own natural instincts when it comes to frightening situations.

I’ve stepped out of an elevator because of a gut feeling. We’ve all had times in our lives when we’ve made a left or right turn, turned around and walked back to check something, or decided something based more on a hunch than facts.

Gavin de Becker wants individual to trust the inherent "gift" of their gut instinct.

It’s an empowering feeling when you make decisions and don’t have to explain to anyone why you made that decision, and more importantly, apologize for your own conduct.

When readers apply this to helping stop violence, isn’t it good to know that if someone has a hinky feeling about a person or a situation a call will be made to 9-1-1, school officials, the office human resource’s department, or a religious leader?

These are the calls that prevent targeted violence. We’ve seen time and time again that a brave person see something and calls, even though they don’t know for sure what is happening. They just have a gut feeling something isn’t right.

A good read for sure.
