Train for Safety

With the motto of Even the youngest can be better preparedTrain for Safety press founder Heather Beal is confident she can help you teach even your preschooler how to be prepared for disaster.

“Generally speaking, we do not prepare our children for disaster,” my friend Heather wrote recently in a blog for PediaPlay. “We make them hold our hand in the parking lot and talk about the dangers of getting burned by the stove, but we stop short of this really big “disaster” word.”

Heather has four books geared specifically to preschoolers – books I’ve given to my own family -  that you can get for yours or give as a gift. You may fear scaring your kids if you talk about disaster. Fear not. These books are designed to demystify disasters and in fact, should help parents and preschool teachers and aids when they are wrangling kids at the worst possible time – during a disaster.

So far, Heather and her able illustrators have produced four inexpensive books and available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The current selection covers hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and earthquakes. Colorful pictures accompany simple explanations of these disasters and help children stay safe and be prepared.
